Kids Don't Need Phones in Bed — They Need Sleep

In this video, Dr. Justin Baeder discusses why children should not have access to phones or electronics at bedtime.

Key Takeaways

  • Sleep is non-negotiable for development - Screen time before and during bed disrupts sleep quality and quantity
  • Phones in bedrooms are a recipe for problems - Late-night social media, texting, and browsing damage mental health and academic performance
  • Parents must set this boundary - This is a parenting decision that directly impacts everything schools are trying to accomplish

I think cell phones are interfering with schooling in a way that's often overlooked because it doesn't happen during school.

And that is when kids are on their phones too late at night.

They're on their phones all night, texting, on social media, doing things on their phones that they should not be doing when they should be sleeping.

So I think one of the rules that parents need to really take seriously is you don't go to bed with your phone.

You plug your phone in, outside of your bedroom if you want to have a phone and you don't stay on it all night and that could apply to other electronics too if you have students who are staying up too late playing video games or just you know on the internet whatever they're doing kids need sleep and i'm convinced that a lot of the absenteeism crisis that we have in schools is due to the fact that kids are not getting enough sleep even if they are quote unquote going to bed if they're in their room all night on electronics they're not going to get the sleep they need and they're not going to be ready for school let me know what you think
