How Principals Can Start Classroom Walkthroughs
In this video, Dr. Justin Baeder discusses why principals need to start getting into classrooms now instead of waiting for a better time.
Key Takeaways
- Start Now - If you’re not in classrooms yet, waiting longer won’t make it easier, so begin immediately.
- October Won’t Save You - The idea that things will calm down later is usually false, and the best time to start is right now.
- Expect Resistance - Barriers include scheduling, mindset, and uncertainty about what feedback to give in different teaching situations.
- Skip the Form - Creating a walkthrough form often becomes a delay tactic and an unnecessary obstacle to getting into classrooms.
- Get Support Live - The webinar promises practical help on scheduling visits, overcoming barriers, and giving useful feedback.

If you didn't start getting into classrooms on the first day of school, traditionally, October is when we tell ourselves, okay, things will calm down by then, we'll have gotten school started, we'll really be hitting our stride, and I'll be able to get into classrooms in October. Well... It's October. October is here, it is well underway, and if you're not getting into classrooms yet, there is not going to be a better time to start.
There's no bad time to start, but it's not gonna get any better than right now. So, I wanna give you a plan for getting into classrooms, and this plan is outlined in my book. I'm gonna tell you everything I can from the book We're going to talk about resistance. We're going to talk about scheduling.
I'm thinking about overcoming every kind of barrier that makes it difficult to get into classrooms, including the barriers that are up here, including the barriers related to the kind of feedback that we need to give. If you're worried about, you know, what do I say to somebody who's really struggling?
Or what do I say to somebody who's really good and doesn't have any obvious room for improvement? All of those are very common scenarios, and we're going to talk about why you should avoid the number one thing that people tend to do when they're trying to get into classrooms, which is making a form.
You don't need a form to get into classrooms, and in fact, the form itself may be one of those barriers. So, join me on Monday.
